Ikea

A few months ago, I let Sean hammer my old Clubbo coffee table. It's a beautifully proportioned table (above) that looks like something you'd get at Shelter for a couple of grand. But the finish wore off quickly so I let Sean have at it. I was surprised to see that the table was actually made of honeycombed cardboard, not MDF or fiberboard. The light weight should have been a clue.

Despite this, I've been appreciating Ikea more. I found you just have to look at the right things. There are quite a few solid wood items, usually made of pine, that are nice. The Hemnes bedside table (below) is $59 and made of solid wood. It's under-scaled like most Ikea furniture and the paint isn't too nice. But it would look great refinished.

I found that part of getting older means that you live in places longer and expect things to last longer and therefore appreciate the longevity of solid wood pieces.
